Okay, seriously. I should say this on my Facebook page, but will probably alienate half the people on there, since I'm talking about a good chunk of them. THINK, PEOPLE, before re-posting all this inane drivel! (Disclaimer - I don't mean funny pictures, those are great, I mean the stupid "repost this if..." comments.) Check if it's a hoax. Don't fill my timeline with disturbing pictures, and inane statements, assuming that posting some lame paragraph on Facebook is going to make a difference in the world. It isn't. You're not helping anyone by announcing for 60 minutes that you know someone who has/had cancer. If you want to make a real difference, go volunteer at the Cancer Society, or donate something to Hospice. Stop being so blinkered and gullible.

And for the love of God, the next person that posts the "drug companies have known how to cure cancer for years, but don't want to because it's such a growth industry" thing is going to get the biggest cyber-smackdown ever. Do they even stop to think about how that makes anyone who is battling cancer feel? Or how it makes me feel, having seen my husband die the cruelest, most inhumane death?

UNLIKE. Fuckers.

This post bought to you by several months of pent-up rage, and three glasses of wine.

Sing it. I watched my father die a hideous death from cancer, and I hate seeing that bullshit. Hate it. Seven and a half years later it can still make me cry.

Wine and fantasies about punching people never goes amiss, though!

Don't think I've done the cancer thing as I don't think it serves a purpose either, but I do tend to post inane puppies and things I find amusing.

I'm not a fan of some of the crap on my FB friends timeline (game requests, over and over) so my apologies for my part in cluttering up your page.

Oh, totally not directed at you! I love all the funny stuff, and tend to repost that a lot myself. It's the faux messages of support for random causes that annoy me, like reposting something is in some way going to help the cause mentioned (ie Post this in your status if you know someone battling cancer. I know 90% of my friends won't post this...) It's not useful, it's just someone trying to see if they can get something to go viral.

Tonight someone posted some really awful pictures of a poor little kiddy with what looked like a dreadful strawberry birthmark, and it said "This baby has cancer! Repost and FB will donate 3c to help her." Which is terrible because not only is some poor baby being exploited for a hoax, but people get conned into thinking they are doing something helpful which might then negate them doing something actually helpful later. It annoyed me that someone was silly enough not to check it before spamming their entire friends list with it.

hehe, I somehow thought that, but wanted to make sure. I dislike anything that is "post this....I know % of my friends won't post this" in fact I've reposted one (about how we don't talk often) and removed the "post this" cause I hate that passive aggressive crap.

So with you on this, bb. I saw a cancer thing yesterday that said something passively-aggressively inane like "I have a favor to ask...I know only a few of you will respond....repost if you know someone with cancer..."

The fuck??

How will reposting something do anything to help those with cancer or a loved one who's watching someone suffer from it? And if I don't repost the stupid thing does that make me an insensitive ass?

Facebook is great for many things but it's also a big, black hole of spam and shit.

Back when things were more e-mail based, I spent way too much time debunking the various hoaxes sent to my inbox. Not that I would forward them in any case, but I liked knowing if it was a hoax or not. 99% of the time it was, and I soon lost count of how many times some of the popular hoaxes paraded through my email. I had to work on a few people to stop sending stuff without checking, or at least just leave me off the list.

FB drives me crazy with all the random religious, political, or other cause related stuff that I know is a hoax, misrepresentation, or outright lie. I'm mainly on it for work related stuff, so I just skim looking for actual content, usually pictures of family members and the like. It's just getting difficult to find that stuff when it's surrounded by stuff that makes my blood pressure rise.

Indeed. I used to email the Snopes links back to whoever had emailed me the detritus, and people got heartily sick of it. Now I post it in the comments on their Facebook instead. I suspect I might get unfriended rather a lot soon.

Hugs. The George Takei pic you posted kinda says it all. The world is populated by well-meaning morons, and after a while, I don't even care that they are well-meaning (although probably just doing this shit to feel good about themselves anyway). The mere fact that they are inane morons means we should kill defriend them all.
