I got asked for ID while buying wine at the supermarket today. The drinking age in New Zealand is 18. Those of you who don't know how old I am (no cheating by looking at my info page) - look at this very recent photo and guess my age. Would you ask me for ID?

I'm the one on the right *snort*
The party in power here (Labour) have been refusing to cut personal or business tax rates for years. Not enough money in the coffers, they said. A couple of weeks ago they called a General Election for September 17th. Since then they have announced that they are wiping interest on all student loans, putting more money into cataract, knee and hip surgeries, increasing the number of community policemen, and raising the ceiling on the Working For Families sceme.
It's the last one that has me steaming. A family earning $98,000 per annum (which is a LOT) with 4 kids can get an additional $4400 a year in benefit payments under this scheme. A childless couple earning much less gets squat. The stupid thing is, the family earning $98,000 are paying the top personal tax rate. Is it not rather ass-about-face to take it off them in tax, then give it back to them in a benefit? Would it not be more cost effective to just let them keep more of their pay to start with?
Meanwhile, middle income NZers like hubby and I who have worked hard to get into good jobs get absolutely nothing. I want to have my vote shamelessly bought too! Not that I really want a handout. I don't need one, but I'm miffed that my hard earned wage is being taken off me in larger than necessary quantities and given to other people to raise their kids, while I can't afford to stop working to have one of my own... I'm sure it's a ploy by Labour to make everyone state-dependent so that we don't dare vote them out.
The National Party, on the other hand, will be announcing tax cut policies on Monday that will benefit everyone across the board, rather than penalising the childless and older people like my parents who have no kids left at home (some of whom are virtually on the breadline). Hmmm, wonder who I'll be voting for? I just can't believe Labour spent so long saying there wasn't any money to hand out, then go on this blatant vote-buying spree. Dishonest much? I'm so pissed off I can't see straight.
I knew there was a reason I was trying to avoid the election coverage...

Date: 2005-08-19 12:05 pm (UTC)I know very little about NZ politics, but "for the children" pandering is always irritating to me, no matter what. Nothing makes the blood boil like politics, huh?

Date: 2005-08-19 12:14 pm (UTC)I get really annoyed when the government starts handing out money to people on a good wage, who obviously had children because they felt they could afford it. They should save the benefits for those who really need them, not people on almost $100k per annum.
Yes, politics sucks big time. Blech, I feel dirty just talking about it.

Date: 2005-08-19 12:29 pm (UTC)It sucks what the NZ govt is doing. As much as it sucks what the Australian govt is doing. Bastards the lot of them. I say we stage a coup and get rid of them altogether. *g*

Date: 2005-08-19 12:33 pm (UTC)Um, it was a Selaks Sav Blanc, on special at under $10. Darn nice wine. I'm all into the ones with the screw caps. No more corked wine! Have you ever tried Brown Brothers Tarrango? It's a pale red that you serve chilled and it's just DIVINE. I am flattered I got asked for ID, just rather surprised. I'm sure I don't look young enough to possibly be 17 or less!

WOOT! Anarchy! I'm in.

Date: 2005-08-19 12:39 pm (UTC)politiciansoppressors of the people!I adore Brown Brothers wines they are simply divine. I think I've had a Tarrango but I'm mostly a Shiraz fan. If you can get your hands on a Grant Burge Frontignac then you should do so. It's a white and it's fruity but not particularly sweet. Very zesty. Also get your hands on a BB Crouchen Riesling. It's great in summer. Mum and I, not to mention my sister and I, get sloshed on it every year. It's good by itself or lovely with Thai food, seafood or chicken.
