littleheaven: (Vidding by Charmax)

Yesterday I was enormously privileged to spend the day with [livejournal.com profile] obsessive24  watching vids.  It was so much fun!  So cool to be able to discuss them without getting that "she's so weird" look from someone.  And she even got my obscure fandom dying vacuum cleaner reference to the Millenium Falcon. *g*  She brought along her vidcon collections and it was great to see things on the 40" hi-def tv screen rather than in squinty-vision on my PC.

I gained much insight into so many things, such as what kind of vidder I am (apart from mediocre, that is) and how different people approach viewing and making vids.  So helpful.  I am hoping it's spurred me out of my vidding funk.

Nicky, we have to do that again.  Hope you're enjoying Farscape!

So, tell us more about how one knows what kind of vidder they are and how different people approach it...

Well, personally I think I fall into the category of a literal vidder. You probably won't find a lot of meta in my vids. When I source songs, I listen to the lyrics above all else. I'm not necessarily trying to say anything (although sometimes I do unintentionally). I'm fairly simplistic in a "these lyrics match these pictures" kind of way.

Nicky, on the other hand, hears the music before the lyrics, and her vids often have a message, either conceptual or political. We approach our vids from two different directions, though our actual technical process (OMG, the notebooks!) is similar.

Hmmm... I don't know what I do, I guess. I don't plan it or think about it. I am pretty literal about the lyrics. They have to fit fairly closely for me, although I can ignore a line or two that isn't quite there, or find a clip that changes the meaning to one I think is more appropriate.
I just slap the music into the editor and start throwing in clips. Of course, I write the same way - loose idea, stream of conciousness... ; )

I think a reasonable good lyrical match is pretty important, too. It's like the backbone of a good vid. But I'm going to try not to get too hung up on perfect matches for every scene if it interrupts the narrative. Of course, to do that I would actually need a narrative *g*

Aww, I had a great time too! We so need to do it again sometime.

I haven't watched Farscape yet because I'm sort of obsessed with Nip/Tuck at the moment, sorry o_O But it's definitely on my next to watch list.

Hee hee, I would have been surprised if you'd started it already. I'm still planning to watch the Heroes discs you sent me!
