I like what I'm hearing about Dreamwidth, and would love to sign up as a companion to my LJ (which is paid for up until December).  I see paid accounts will be available in a couple of weeks, but as the household income is likely to be somewhat reduced for the majority of the year, I can't really justify paying for more than one journal.  Does any kindly soul have a spare invite code they would be happy to part with? *flutters eyelashes*

Haven't got a code; I'm looking myself (or rather waiting for accounts to go on sale).

But from what I hear, all you need is to buy a month of paid time for three bucks to circumvent the need for an invite code. After that you can let the journal lapse back to unpaid and still keep the account.

Ooh, thanks for the tip! I shall definitely go that route if I am invite-less by the 30th :o)

What is this Dreamwidth? By that I mean, what is so speshul about it that has piqued your interest? :)

It's an alternative to LJ - not that I plan to leave LJ, but it's good to have a backup just in case. It was started by some ex-employees of LJ and works in a similar fashion, though I believe they want to depart from the LJ model and achieve things that were cast aside or undermined by LJ. It's also apparently designed particularly with the creative user in mine, so perfect for fandom journals. The people on my f-list who are raving about it (and in many cases have already signed up) are ones that I respect greatly, so if they think it's worthy, then it must be.

Here's one person's reason (link taken from the Dreamwidth wiki) http://schattenstern.livejournal.com/318517.html?format=light

Thanks for the explanation and link! I'll have to read it in spurts. All that tech talk puts me to sleep if I do too much at once. :)
