Gyaaaaahhhh!

Has anyone ever had a non-allergic amoxicillin rash? I started a course Sunday before last, finished them the day before yesterday and this morning I broke out in spots.  ALL. OVER. They are everywhere. My butt, my ears, my neck, my scalp, fingers, torso, arms, legs, ankles, face, hands... everywhere bar the soles of my feet. Thousands of them, like insect bites. I look like I was attacked by 1000 hungry mosquitoes. I took an antihistamine tablet this morning, but they've continued to spread. And they itch like woah. What do I do?

I've not eaten, washed my clothes in, or bathed in anything new. The thing I took the antibiotic for is almost gone (though since other family members now have it, I suspect it was viral not bacterial anyway). The odd thing is that I was tested earlier this year for allergy to penicillin - all the common types - because my mother couldn't remember if I'd reacted to it as a kid, and every test came back negative for allergies.

SO WTF IS THIS?

*scratches wildly*

I do NOT want to have to go to the doctor for the fifty-squillionth time this year.

just me (and with no dr. degree) but I'd seek medical attention. While it sounds like amoxicillin rash - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amoxicillin#Non-allergic_amoxicillin_rash
it might also be a true allergic reaction

Thanks, hun. It's worse today so I've made an appt for the doc. It certainly looks and feels allergic!

I'd say it's the antibiotic and of course it will take 4-5 days after stopping the anitbiotic for it to completley clear ur system . I was told that just recently for an antibiotic that was causing me secondary problems 2 weeks ago.. it seemed to take forever for the problem to clear up. When the reaction becomes severe and needs serious medial intervention is when u get the anaphalactic shock thingie with the swelling throat, tounge and can't breathe.

I also had the same kind of rash ur talking about from a Birth Control pill I took that too took 2 weeks after stopping it for it to clear out.. I was putting powder on myself the entire time i was so uncomfortable!

I thought it was pretty odd that it didn't happen until after I'd finished the course, but I guess it is still in my system. My Dad had an anapalactic reaction to Augmentin a couple of months back and almost died from it, so I know what to look out for. I'm just red and burning and itchy right now, and going to the doc in a couple of hours.

I'm guessing you're going to have to go back to the doc, sorry to say. In the meantime there's always calamine lotion.

Yeah, I've made an appointment for lunctime. *sigh* Ah, good old calamine lotion. I'll look like a geisha girl if I cover the whole rash with it, LOL.

Yep, it's back to the doctor for you, and right quick, too! I wouldn't rule out it being an allergic reaction, even if you haven't been allergic in the past. Also, not all antihistimines work for well for allergic reactions. It depends on the active ingredient. The one you want for that sort of thing is one with diphenhydramine hydrchloride. That would be what is marketed as Benadryl in the U.S. and Canada, Dimedrol, in other countries. You want the allergy kind, not a non-drowsy formulation. It will make you sleepy.

Thanks, hun, I've made an appointment. I took something called Zotep yesterday that I was prescribed a while back after I got bitten by a spider, and it is for allergic reactions. Now it's worn off my skin is burning. No more penicillin for me, methinks.

Thanks, hun. I look like a lepper right now :o(

Hey, are you going to Armageddon this year? I'm going on the Monday (it might be a bit quieter by then). It's at the showgrounds this time.

I'm going with my friend (who's just moved up to Akl and hasn't been before) and my sister, and possibly M. We're probably going on Sunday because there's a masquerade ball this year. And we're thinking of going in costume, but can't come up with good ideas, so probably will just end up going as slutty schoolgirls or something. :D (Not M, naturally.)

That sounds cool. I'm going on Monday because Craig is there that day. I might go Sunday too, depends on the babysitting situation :o)

As I sit here watch my son take his skin off with now non-exhistant fingernails ( I chopped them to prevent damage) I am feeling fairly empathetic to your plight... 4 days of school missed for strep... Now it will be 4 more because I dont want him scratching his ba**s when he goes to the front of the room to answer a question from his teacher... Meh.. Such is life, sounds like an amox rash for both of you... GOOD LUCK!
