littleheaven: (How You Doin)

Maggie came through her operation okay. I dropped her off just after 9am this morning, and they said I could call at 1pm to see how she got on. I didn't quite make it - I called at 12.55. They laughed when I said I couldn't wait any longer! The vet herself came on the line and told me all about the mass she removed. It was some sort of over-growth of mammary tissue, filled with milk (hence why it was so soft) but also quite infected (explains why the poor bubba squeaked when I tried to pick her up). Good news is it wasn't really a tumour, which I'm pleased about, as once a rat develops a mammary tumour, it's normally a starter for ten.

I've just had her sitting in my lap, bruxing like mad. For the un-initiated, that's a rat's version of purring. They chatter their teeth together with a sound like a tiny steam train, and their eyeballs bug in and out of their head very fast. Yep, it sounds weird. It looks even weirder. But it's wonderful, because it means she's happy. She can't go back to her friends yet, they might try to chew her stitches open. In any case, the cage is multi-level, and she needs to keep as still as possible for the next few days. So just supervised tea-parties until next weekend, I think.

Tomorrow is a public holiday, so I get to keep an eye on her properly. Lots of yoghurt-covered raisins will be coming her way this weekend, I think!

Aww, that's so great for you two. I'm glad everything turned out well and that she's resting comfortably now.
