Okay, the person who said summer was coming back this week? Where are you?

"Summer" does not mean "tropical cyclone", my friend.

Yes, because we haven't had enough shitty weather this month, now we are going to be sandwiched in between the weather system that caused this, and Tropical Cyclone Ivy.

One's coming in from the west, as does most of our weather, the other from the north east. Ivy is probably going to miss hitting us head-on, but could graze the East Cape. That's if it doesn't track west at all. Thank goodness I did the gardening last weekend.

In budgie news, my wee girl Harry, has started behaving oddly. She's climbing right into the covered seed pot, jamming her whole body in under the plastic hood, and scrabbling around in there. This is in addition to climbing into the uncovered grit pot, kicking grit all over the place, and delicately picking up beakfuls to throw over the side. All the while, her boyfriend Linus, is sitting on the perch yelling "Naughty Claire!" as if somehow, it's all my fault. When I taught him to talk, I didn't know I was gonna get told off by him!

Lastly, being home sick is BOOOOORING.

She's trying to make a nest :)

Oh, God, really? Should I give her a nesting box or something? She's 5 years old, and has a fatty cyst between her legs, so she's probably not in great condition to breed. Also, she's skeletally a very tiny bird, and combined with her age, I'm worried she may get egg-bound. Will she be okay if I just let her carry on as she is? Or would it be detremental not to let her lay an egg?

Thanks for the info. Should have known that you'd know, oh goddess of the pet shop :o)

Well if she's going to form an egg inside her, it's going to happen with or without a nest. We used to have a few egg-bound hens every season and the budgie cage had no nesting boxes to encourage breeding. It's up to you whether you want to give her a nesting box or leave it as-is. She'll eventually get it out of her sytem, it's just that it's birdy breeding season right now. If you suspect that she is becoming egg-bound, trot her along to a vet for proper treatment.

Thanks!

I was under the erroneous impression that budgies wouldn't breed if they didn't have a nest box, but goodness knows where I picked that up from... I'll keep a close eye on her. The vet's seen her recently because of her lump, and she was fine then, but rest assured she'll be down there quick smart if I suspect an egg problem. My vets are as good with birds as they are with rats, thankfully :o)
