The wind's already up. We live next to a ridge which is covered in native bush, and the trees are thrashing around. Quite amazing the noise they make! Not windy enough to shake the house yet. I have to drive over the harbour in a minute, that's always fun on the bridge, in those narrow lanes, with a 70kmph cross wind. I love my little car, but the high sides make it a bit susceptible to being blown around.

Apparently the low pressure system coming from Australia is going to do more damage than Cyclone Ivy. It's deepening as it crosses the Tasman sea, and will arrive tomorrow. This morning we had a red sky, which, as farmers will tell you, is bad news. The sun came up behind a thick haze, looking like a giant fuzzy golden ball, it was quite spectacular.

Cyclone Ivy, due Sunday/Monday, is probably going to break up and become a tropical storm rather than a cyclone. Most of them do, as they cross the cooler waters near New Zealand. So it won't be a full-on hurricane, but could still be pretty bad. Bola, in 1988, was no longer a cyclone, and that was scary as hell. I have a vivid memory of hanging onto a lamp post with both arms, while waiting for a bus, so I didn't get blown into the street.

I am fascinated by extreme weather. Part of me can't wait to experience really strong winds, violent thunder and lightning - then there's the other part of me that's worried my garden furniture is going to end up in Birkenhead. Apparently the thing to do in a cyclone is open the windows on the leeward side of the house. Otherwise the air pressure builds up inside and that's when your roof blows off. Ack!

Here is a picture from the Nasa Earth Observatory website of Ivy. (Very cool site, by the way, if you like satellite pictures).
