Mar. 21st, 2004 11:28 amOh, Happy Birthday!
verucawerewolf. Sorry, I've probably missed it by now, hope it was good.
WARNING: Highly out-of-character rant ahead.
What on earth is all this CRAP going on about the DB ad promotion? I hate shipper wars. I've been right through the thread regarding the ad at Stranger Things, and most of the posts have been people bending over backward to make sure the ad isn't shippy, and doesn't step on anyone's toes or alienate any particular group, so that everyone who loves DB can contribute without being worried. Sure, there's a few reactions to some negative feedback (and not very strong ones at that), but on the whole it's been very professionally handled. I haven't seen any bashing, hating, accusations of theft, or anything else to invite the sort of vitriole and insults I've seen slung around.
Holy underpants, people. There are wars going on in the world, people are DYING from violence and religious persecution and famine and disease; good people are taken from us every day in road accidents and by cancer and at the hands of lunatics... At the end of the day - it's a freaking TV show. These are pretend people. Obsessions aside, it means nothing in the grand scheme of the universe. So let's all stop bashing the people trying to do something nice for DB. Either contribute or don't. But leave all the other shit out of it.
There, I've said it. I feel better.

OMG! I'm Kel? I knew all of us at ST were only 15 multiple-personalitied lunatics, but I never suspected. All this time, I thought I was Daisy! I know you meant to say Claire ;o) Hell, it was a sweet sentiment. Call me anything you like! Hee :o)

It's all very confusing. Best just to say we're Angela.

Date: 2004-03-21 01:06 am (UTC)I think this ad is a terrific idea. When I heard where it originated... well yes, there was a sound of *clonker* as my jaw hit the floor. I mean, how could this not come as a surprise when for the past year or more I've seen this board do nothing but trash the show, its creator and, yeah, Boreanaz got his share as well. I've seen you guys manage to put a negative spin on everything not CC, in a way I personally found unfair and which led me to leave. Hence the surprise at something this positive. Takes a bit getting used to, is all.
(btw, the board is so much in the habit of bashing, I got a feeling some people aren't even aware when they're doing it. I'm not even getting into the talk of not mentioning 'Angel' because... nah.)
Also... um, you're probably not aware of it but the board can be a scary place to outsiders. I thought twice about posting, and was fully expecting to get slammed for it. Because I've seen it happen before, I guess. Didn't happen, so I obviously did the board unjustice.
Anyhoo, his ad is a great thing, what with fans thanking everybody and their dog and with DB having gone out of his way to promote the show over the years. I hadn't planned to bring all this up at this of all times, but I've seen several people express surprise. Sorry if any of this offends you, it's just my honest opinion. I just love the show, so when someone speaks badly about it... it's like someone calling your baby ugly ;o).
And like Claire said, in the grand scheme of things there are more important matters anyway.

Date: 2004-03-21 01:57 am (UTC)I just have to say, personally, I wasn't surprised about the ad. There are a lot of people at ST who love DB, and I've never seen anyone persecuted for that. As for being negative about the show - yeah, some people are. Others still enjoy it. That's cool, either way. As I said, it's all opinions and everyone's entitled to one. I'm still watching the show. Nobody's jumped down my throat about it :o)
At the end of the day, as we all seem to agree, there's more important stuff to be fighting over than who said what to who. Like why the city council still hasn't cut down the weeds in the "reserve" behind my house. If we could generate the same kind of reaction to that, I'd have the frikkin Kew Gardens back there ;o)

Date: 2004-03-21 04:45 am (UTC)Heh. For example. And today is the first day in four months I'm a) not working, b) not sick and c) it's not raining. Well okay, it's raining right now. But at least it's not raining all day long. Too good to waste time with kerfuffles. I'll be outside, if anybody needs me.
Besides, we keep going with the bickering, we can already start writing our acceptance speeches for fandom_wank. :eg:

Date: 2004-03-21 09:04 am (UTC)If you're talking about not making a big deal out of 'Angel' in the ad, that wasn't just ST talking. Other people from other boards said the same thing. And it's not because anyone hates Ats or the character of Angel. That's not it at all. We love Ats and Angel (hell he's one half of C/A so we must love the big lug a little), at least before it was masticated and spit out all new and shiny and there are plenty who still do love Ats even at ST. The point was not to over emphasize Ats and make it an ad *about Angel* because this ad wanted to thank him for everything he's done, not just for his Ats/BtVS role. And to thank him for being who he is and not just for playing Angel. We also wanted him to know we, his fans, haven't pigeon-holed him as Angel forever and we will watch whatever he does with fresh eyes. There was no attempt to belittle Ats or Angel in our intentions.
If you were talking about something else, then never mind. :D

Date: 2004-03-21 11:50 am (UTC)And what I don't quite get, what exactly do we want to thank him for if not his portrayal of the character? Hell, this is pretty much what he's done so far. Done well, and it's nothing that needs to be glossed over.
Nothing personal, but I can't say how tired I am of this whole argument. I'll go back to avoiding the board; this is really a waste of time.

Date: 2004-03-21 12:13 pm (UTC)Anyway, like I said to start with, I don't want any arguing the point - conflict upsets me - so lets just all agree that not everyone's opinions on the matter are the same, and either contribute to, or abstain from the ad fund, and respect each other's right to whatever course of action they decide to take.
And don't panic. I'm not gonna make everyone hold hands and sing kum-bah-yah. Unless you want to, of course... ;o)

Date: 2004-03-21 12:24 pm (UTC)Come to think of it, I don't believe anyone's ever been caused to change their opinion in a kerfuffle. Or is there an actual precedence?
And you don't want to hear me sing ;o).

Date: 2004-03-21 12:49 pm (UTC)So true. An exercise in futility, one might say :o)
And hey, if we all sing, it might be so truly horrendous, everyone would forget all about the fighting, and run for the hills with their hands over their ears ;o)
