New computer! New computer!
I am a weak, weak woman. I broke down and ordered a 3.2Ghz P4 from Dell on Thursday. It's as powerful and fast as hubby's kick-ass baby (but without the dvd burner, 17" digital LCD screen, and state-of-the-art sound card) so that means my movie making software will run on it, and I can play dvd's in it. Yay!
I am pissed off at Placemakers, who sold me a dehumidifier for $420 two and a half years ago, which now has an unrepairable fault. They said that since it's out of warranty, they can't replace it. Under the Consumer Guarantees Act here in NZ, I have a right to expect that it will be of "acceptable quality", and one of the clauses under that section is "durable - item must function for a reasonable amount of time without completely breaking down". I don't call two winters worth of use a "reasonable period". They've offered to take the thing back and get a second opinion on it. Meantime my windows are starting to stream water in the mornings, and in no time my curtains will begin to grow mildew. So guess what I have to go buy this morning?

It is in Auckland - very humid, you see. The whole city is on a narrow strip of land, with the Tasman Sea on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other side, so the air is usually quite moisture-laden from travelling over the ocean. Add that to the fact my house is right next to some native bush (forest), and the back end gets very little sun during winter, and you can see why the house gets so damp. We get a standard house-bucket full of water (9 litres) out of the spare bedrooms and bathroom every 3-4 days. And that doesn't even take into account the rest of the house, which is the machine we're missing at the moment - the one for the living room. On the bright side, all the vegitation is very lush... And it never gets really, really cold or really, really hot here. So a bit of humidity isn't too much to bear. It's not nearly as bad as places like Singapore or Fiji, thank goodness.
ok

Also, to be very rude - how much did you have to pay for the LCD? Am looking at upgrading and am trying to figure what's a good price
Re: ok
Date: 2004-04-23 06:49 pm (UTC)I'm not sure how much a flat screen will set you back, because he paid twice the money for his 'bundle' than I did for mine, but the processor and ram will have become cheaper since last October, so it's impossible to work out. What you want to do is go to Dell online (I assume for you it'll be www.dell.com.au) and check out the prices for screens alone. Last time I looked it was over a grand. Monitors ain't cheap!
Aah, here we go - on my bill, the computer came with the 17" CRT monitor. If I wanted to change that to a 15" flat panel (analog only) it would have been an additional $320NZ. A 17" analog added $670ND and a 17" digital added $970NZ. Since I don't know what the actual cost of the monitor is that I'm getting, I can't really tell what amount you'd have to add the extra dollars to, but it's safe to say a 17" digital or analog would cost you $1000 plus (NZ dollars, so multiply by .85 to get AUD). Hope that helps :o)
