Them's fightin' words...
Sep. 10th, 2004 08:29 amListen up, all you Americans! Tonight we (New Zealand) get to play you (USA) in one of the worlds oldest and greatest organised sports. Steeped in history and pink gin. The gentleman's game. A game of skill and grace and contorting your body into impossible shapes. My favourite sport in the whole wide world. Cricket.
Okay, so it's actually one-day cricket, which has only been around since the 1980's, but whatever...
And, since we don't often get to play the USA in anything, let alone something that we're good at, this is a pretty momentous occasion. New Zealand have been the best team in the world this year, in one-day cricket. And Chris Cairns is a total babe. So is Daniel Vettori, in a bookish sort of way. I love the way he pokes his tongue out when he bowls... But I digress.
It's the ICC Champions Trophy, in Sri Lanka, starts at 9pm tonight. Which in Eastern Standard Time is... oh, 5am. But don't worry, it goes for eight hours (well, it should, unless one team gets totally anihillated, in which case it could be as short as four hours). But if you're awake, totally watch it. Think of me, sitting at home with my big NZ flag :o) And cheering while we totally win ;o)
My sister could once identify the entire NZ cricket team by their butts. Just thought I'd mention that.
Of course, in a couple of days we have to play Australia, and we'll probably get pummeled.

Date: 2004-09-10 07:58 am (UTC)I collect names and I've never been able to find any satisfactory answer. A search I did a few years ago turned up some dog kennels in South Africa and a locally born Zinzan I know was given the name because his mother thought it was Welsh!
And yeah, pummeled. :)

Date: 2004-09-10 03:41 pm (UTC)We won the match against USA by 210 runs. I caught the last 8 overs in which we scored 136 runs. Which is only one less than the entire USA team scored in their whole innings.
Care to put some money on the Aussie match? ;o)
