Stuff 'n' nonsense
Sep. 18th, 2004 11:04 pmI'm burning a mixture of bergamot, mandarin, and geranium essential oils (the proper theraputic stuff, not the cheap chemical fragrant oils you can get) - primarily to get rid of the onion and garlic smell from my giant pot of bolognase sauce - but it's really lifted my mood. I should get back into aromatherapy, I really like it. I used to have about 40 different oils, but most of them never got used and they expire for theraputic use quite quickly, though you can burn them for smell alone for ages after. If I had to pick just 5 oils, I would go with Lavender, Peppermint, Bergamot, Palma Rosa and Geranium. Lavender is good for everything - it's antibacterial, antiseptic, antiviral, antifungal... and you can dab it on neat. It's amazing on burns. Peppermint is good for headaches and nausea. Bergamot is lovely and citrus-y and good for depression. Palma Rosa is sweet and calming - very much like Rose but much less expensive. Geranium is great for balancing the hormones and mixes well with the citrus oils.
My bolognase sauce was a triumph. I only cook once every three months. I get my giant pot with the glass lid out, and do curry or mince or something. I took my mother's bolognase sauce recipie, which is basically mince, onions, garlic, mushrooms, celery, tinned tomatoes, tomato paste, worcestershire sauce, beef stock cubes, tomato paste, salt, sugar, and pepper, and then I threw in some brocolli, spinach, oregano and basil as well. It tasted divine. I have 11 meal-sized portions to freeze. One per week :o) I shall be cooking chicken in a honey mustard sauce next weekend. I'm cheating with that one - I got a stir-in sauce. Nice with jasmine rice and a salad.
I took my last two rats to the vet today. Both have mammary tumours developing low down on their tummies. The vet said they're in good nick for old girls, and they are booked in for surgery on October 1st. I'm a bit leery after Bridget didn't survive her lumpectomy, but the vet said her tumour was all wrapped around everything inside her rear end, and the op was just huge. Either way, she wouldn't have lived long. Ella and Abby's tumours feel small and easy to remove, so I'm taking the punt. They'll kill them eventually, if I don't have them removed. If the tumours come back quickly after their operations, which they probably will, I think I'll call it quits on the surgical intervention front. They're 3 yrs old at Christmas, which is long-lived for rats, so if I can just buy them a few more months, I'll be happy. I don't want to be sticking them under the knife again and again at their age. Perhaps they won't get any more, fingers crossed.
And in fandom news, I just watched the Stargate episode "Beneath The Surface" for the 1st time. Hot, sweaty, stubbly Daniel Jackson. :thud: I almost choked on my bolognase sauce.
Oh, and I think either Anthony or Ricki-Lee will win Australian Idol. I'm making that call now, with 10 of them remaining. They both look like stars already, the others look like kids trying to be stars, although they're all really good.
Hmmm, that's all.
