Well, I've just discovered New Zealand has its own version of Netflix. It's called Fatso. All the DVD's you can eat!

Let me go back to the start of this sorry tale... I ordered Stargate SG1 Season 5 from DVD Soon - a Canadian site (very very good prices, free shipping). It got shipped (after being out of stock FOREVER - thanks to MGM) but never showed up. Turned out I had to wait 9 WHOLE WEEKS before I could claim the item as lost. Being the patient saint that I am (NOT!) I ordered it again, intending to just ask for credit for the missing set when my 9 weeks expired (November). But, oh look, it was out of stock again! So I decided to download it online, only to find out all the non-peer-to-peer downloads have been taken down. But all was not lost... Sky 1 was showing the end of Season 4, so I figured, I can deal with only seeing one episode a week. But, lo! As soon as Season 4 finished, they skipped straight ahead to Season 6! :headdesk:

But today I discovered Fatso, so I have signed up, booked Season 5, plus all of Farscape, so I can sci-fi to my heart's content. All without having to leave the house *g* I loooooove technology. :snogs computer:

I saw it in a NetGuide magazine, but couldn't remember the name, so I just Googled "online DVD rental New Zealand" and up it came. I think it's so titled because you can fill yourself up on "all the DVD's you can eat" (their catch phrase). It's a stretch, isn't it?

You have your very own version in Aussie - I just found it on Google:
http://webflicks.com.au/user/homeNewUser2.php

Looks exactly the same - flat monthly fee, keep them as long as you like, make a list of what you want and they'll send you the next ones in the queue as soon as you return the previous ones. Darn good idea, I think!

Ta! Checked it out plus three others I googled and found DVDJam is the cheapest at 35.95 (for 3 at a time), plus bonus discs aren't counted towards that number.

Just trying to work out if I can afford it. :)

Well, if you go through them quite fast, it's good value for money. But otherwise probably cheaper just to get them from the local video shop :o)

Actually is more that I don't bother leaving the house [if I can help it] over the weekend, so having these available to watch would be handy, particularly since I always have probs getting the vids back on time...hell just returned can be a prob sometimes.

So it's a case of yes this would be good, but it's an expense I really haven't been expending lately. Can't remember when I last got a dvd out, and the last movie I saw was amonth ago so am now tryng to fit it into the budget.....in a "*slam, slam* get in there", kind of way :)

I could finally see Spidey and Troy

I am so in touch with wanting to veg at home over the weekends. I don't go to movie theatres, being a bit agorophobic. And after working all week I can't be bothered doing the hair and makeup and going down the video shop, when half the time they don't have what I want. So this thing is doubly good - HUGE range and I can stay in my jammies *g*

Y'all will enjoy renting by mail. Even though the library where I work does have some DVDs, I've been using Netflix for over a year now. It's really great for catching up with TV shows that I've missed over the years for one reason or another. When boxed sets run between $40 to over $100 US, $20 a month is cheap in comparison. And because I've got so many boxed sets in the queue, I've got over 100 discs waiting. :)

Yeah, the more I thought about it last night, the cooler it got. I'd been ringing around all the local video shops trying to find someone that stocked Farscape - I primarily watch TV shows rather than movies and the shops tend not to have the TV stuff. Fatso has all of them - everything released here, and some that aren't yet! In New Zealand, it costs $150 per half-set for programmes like Angel and Buffy, and about $160 for a full season of Stargate. Our online rental fee is $30NZ for two discs at a time, $40 for 3 and so on, so as long as you don't sit on them for too long, it's really good value.

I didn't have much time to think about what I wanted to see, and I've already got 27 discs in my queue. SUCH a good idea!

Oh, absolutely, friend away!

Julie is indeed evil, and has corrupted me in ways you cannot imagine... Although you might get an inkling once I put my first Stargate fic up on my website! (coming soon, no pun intended!)

The blame for the newfound interest in Farscape lies soley with [livejournal.com profile] starlet2367. Who is also evil *g* While I am not yet totally converted, I am teetering on the brink. Hence the Farscape hireage, which will undoubtedly push me over the edge. Leather Pants!

:friends you back:

Goody, goody, goody. Yes, our Julie is indeed evil and I tell her that regularly. She said you were ranting on the Leather Pants and said something about Michael Shanks not getting to wear some, so we're conspiring to send you the two Andromeda eps that he was in.

The threat of Michael Shanks in leather pants is almost too much for me at this time in the morning :faints:

If y'all find it's a bit difficult to send me the Andromeda eps, I can always rent them from Fatso. It's the shiznit! :cuddles SG1 Season 5: My husband poo-poo'd it when I signed up on Sunday. Now he's watching my dvd's and asking if he can add things to my queue *g*

Anyway, welcome to the madness that is my LJ. Hope you don't get bored!

I have said episodes on DVD and copies have been made for you. I'll be giving them to Julie/Rachel/Rox... eh, whichever one she is at the moment, to send to you this Friday.

SG-1 season 5, eh? I'm guessing you already know how that one ends. :(

Oh, you guys are the greatest!! :covers you both in big, sloppy kisses:

Yes, I know how S5 ends :o( Luckily I have S7 on pre-order. I'm thinking of skipping S6 altogether, to lessen the pain *g*

Actually there are some S6 eps that are almost required viewing-"Abyss", "Changeling" and "Full Circle" among them.

Okay, so you know how 5 ends-imagine if you will NOT knowing! I didn't get SHOWTIME, but a friend was making me copies of the eps, but would not spoil me as to what was going to happen, per my request. So, there I am watching the tape, having NO IDEA what was about to happen! I think I'm still scarred by the experience.

Oh, poor thing. That would have been a horrid shock :o(

I've seen Abyss (the oatmeal sweater of luuuuurve!) and have all of 6 on DVD, I just don't know if I can stand to watch all those empty eps *g*
